Professional Caregiving

The End of Summer -- and Start of Something New!

Welcome to the end of summer, and hello to all of the professionals and caregivers out there who are readers of this column. It is my pleasure to step in and try to follow the brilliant job that Sylvia Nissenboim has done for such a long time! I have had the opportunity to read through her past columns, and she really has provided some excellent information.

The publisher of this website, Chris Pederson, suggested that I start by introducing myself and giving you a taste of my style and passion for everything “senior,” so here goes. . . .

My name is Valerie VanBooven, I am a registered nurse by trade, and a professional geriatric care manager. I wrote the book Aging Answers: Secrets to Successful Long-Term Care Planning, Caregiving, and Crisis Management, in 2003.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to speak all across the country to thousands of consumers and professionals on topics related to eldercare, long-term care planning, marketing to seniors, marketing to adult children of aging parents, and everything in between. I am a fairly regular guest on the Today Show, talking about subjects like reverse mortgages, long-term care, having the talk with mom and dad about long-term care, etc.

Finally, for almost two years I have hosted a local radio program here in St. Louis called Healthy Wealthy and Wise. We have had a lot of fun with the show.

One of the things I have learned over the years is that most of us in the social service world don’t have a master’s degree in marketing, and all of us could use a little help in figuring out how to best reach the decision makers in each family. Some of us have very small budgets, and for others, the sky is the limit.

As such, my focus is two-fold -- as you'll see coming through in my columns. First, as consumers, we need all of the help and information we can get to be able to make informed choices with and for our aging family members. Second, as senior service providers we need to make sure our “inside reality” matches our “outside perception.”

By that I mean that if we are telling people we have the best food in town, that’s our “outside perception”. If we DO have the best food in town, then our “inside reality” matches our “outside perception.” The problems occur when the two don’t match up. Consumers figure that out quickly, and we want our consumers to be happy -- and well served.

Over the next few weeks I’ll explain more about this, and hopefully provide everyone from consumers to professionals the tools they need to make better choices, and provide better service.

I welcome your feedback and interaction as this column takes flourish under my watch, and I encourage you to email me with your questions, thoughts, observations and suggestions at Some of what I receive may just find its way into this column!
